Tra gli ulivi, i mandorli, i fichi e la macchia mediterranea delle campagne biscegliesi sgorgava un torrente che nei millenni ha plasmato il paesaggio, aprendo cavità nella terra: la Lama Santa Croce. Oggi il torrente è prosciugato per quasi tutta la durata dell’anno ma la sua azione geologica millenaria rimane visibile nel panorama rurale.
La lama, abitata sin dal Paleolitico Medio, non ha semplicemente modellato il paesaggio: ha generato uno spazio liminale, simbolico, una soglia naturale tra il mondo tangibile e un mondo altro.
Millenni fa, negli anfratti della Grotta di Santa Croce trovarono rifugio i Neanderthal, come testimonia il femore rinvenuto dagli scavi archeologi guidati da Francesco Saverio Majellaro. Molto tempo dopo, le genti neolitiche abitarono questi stessi luoghi, lasciando focolari, ceramiche e insediamenti sparsi fra il Pantano e la Lama Paterno, al confine con Trani. Ancora oltre, nell’Età del Bronzo, i dolmen della Chianca, di Albarosa, Frisari e dei Paladini trasformarono questo paesaggio in uno spazio dedicato al culto degli antenati, con tombe megalitiche che generano ancora oggi domande sulla loro costruzione.
In molte culture preistoriche o dell’Età del Bronzo le grotte non erano semplici rifugi, ma cavità originarie, ingressi simbolici che portavano in un mondo ctonio, luoghi di passaggio dove il mondo sensibile sembrava dissolversi in un altrove magico. L’acqua appartiene a questo linguaggio simbolico-rituale: nelle tradizioni indoeuropee attraversare uno specchio d’acqua significava oltrepassare una soglia: dallo Stige al Lete della mitologia greca, il confine tra i mondi era quasi sempre affidato a un corso d’acqua. La lama, le grotte e la pietra diventavano così elementi di una stessa simbologia del sacro.
Non sappiamo quali credenze appartenessero agli abitanti preistorici di Bisceglie eppure è difficile non cogliere analogie: gli stessi luoghi frequentati nel Paleolitico tornarono a essere vissuti nel Neolitico, monumentalizzati nell’età del Bronzo attraverso strutture megalitiche e, infine, risignificati in epoca altomedievale.
Lo raccontano anche due grotte poco note: la Grotta del Finestrino, adombrata dalla lussureggiante vegetazione che quasi la nasconde agli occhi dei passanti e la Grotta delle Due Crocette, dove piccole croci dipinte testimoniano una nuova lettura cristiana di uno spazio che, da millenni, sembrava già appartenere a una dimensione altra.
Ecco la vera geografia segreta della Lama di Santa Croce: non una valle dalle alture dolci con natura selvaggia e i campi assolati ma un insieme di memorie in cui acqua, pietra e uomo hanno continuato, per migliaia di anni, a riconoscere nello stesso paesaggio una soglia.
