Secondo alcune testimonianze, Mauro, nato a Betlemme, arrivò in Puglia nel 51 dopo Cristo per predicare il Vangelo, in quanto era stato nominato Vescovo da San Pietro.
Al suo arrivo nella città di Bisceglie, due cavalieri romani di nome Sergio e Pantaleone, essendo stati affascinati dal Vangelo, si convertirono al Cristianesimo.
Nel frattempo, il proconsole romano, venuto a sapere della conversione, ordinò l’arresto dei tre uomini che, il 27 luglio 117, furono condannati a morte. I corpi furono nascosti dalla nobildonna Tecla de Fabiis in contrada Sagina, dove fece costruire un sepolcro.
Il 10 Maggio 1167, i corpi furono ritrovati da tre uomini di nome Diodato, Dionigi e Gualtiero, i quali avevano sognato i santi che chiedevano di andare a ritrovare le loro ossa nel terreno vicino il casale di Sagina.
A seguito di una grande disputa tra i cittadini dei paesi vicini, i quali si contendevano le ossa dei Santi, si decise di porre tali ossa su un carro trainato dai buoi cosicché sarebbero state custodite nella città verso la quale i buoi si sarebbero diretti.
Così, il 30 luglio dello stesso anno le ossa vennero poste nella Cattedrale di Bisceglie e la città si aggiudicò i suoi “Santi Protettori”.
